Discrete carcinomatous metastases in the extraocular muscles.

چکیده
The orbit is a rare site for metastatic carcinoma (Duke-Elder, I952) and, although such orbital deposits may commonly involve muscle secondarily, discrete metastatic tumours in the extraocular muscles are extremely rare, as in muscle generally (Willis, I952, I953). A search of the literature has revealed four previous cases: two from carcinoma of the breast (Wintersteiner, I899; Bedford and Daniel, i960), one from carcinoma of the lung (Horner, I864), and one from malignant melanoma of the skin (Adelstein and Schmidt, I 968). This paper reports two further cases of extraocular muscle metastases from primary carcinoma of the breast, and outlines some of the diagnostic difficulties which arose.

Proximal myopathy due to discrete carcinomatous metastases in muscle.
Two patients are described with proximal muscle weakness and electromyographic evidence of a myopathic process. In both, discrete carcinomatous metastatic deposits were found in proximal muscles. The possible clinical implications are discussed.
متن کاملHistopathologic Changes of Extraocular Mus-cle Fibers after Injection of Botulinum Toxin
Background: Use of botulinum toxin is becoming a popular way in treatment of some forms of strabismus. To evaluate the morphological changes in the orbital surface layer muscles of the rabbit eye following a single injection of botulinum toxin. Methods: 10 white Dutch rabbits weighing 2–3 kg received either 10 units (group 1; n=5) or 20 units (group 2; n=5) of botulinum toxin into the superior r...
متن کاملCarcinoid Tumor of the Ovary with Bilateral Infiltration of the Extraocular Muscles: A Case Report and a Brief Review of the Literature
Purpose: We report an unusual case of trabecular carcinoid of the ovary with orbital involvement. Methods: We encountered a 49-year-old woman with a complaint of bilateral proptosis. Ocular examination revealed severe bilateral proptosis and signs of corneal exposure. Orbital CT scan showed massive enlargement of extraocular muscles and optic nerve compression. The patient medical history showe...
متن کاملNeurological Disorders Associated with Malignant Disease.
CEREBRAL metastases occur in approximately 5% of all fatal cases of malignant disease (Willis, I952) and the effects of discrete macroscopical deposits are well known. On the other hand, disorders of the nervous system resulting from either diffuse microscopical infiltration or other associated changes are less familiar and are the main concern of this survey. In recent years it has been shown ...
متن کاملHit the mark with diffusion-weighted imaging: metastases of rhabdomyosarcoma to the extraocular eye muscles
BACKGROUND Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent malignant intraorbital tumour in paediatric patients. Differentiation of tumour recurrence or metastases from post-therapeutic signal alteration can be challenging, using standard MR imaging techniques. Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is increasingly considered a helpful supplementary imaging tool for differentiation of orbital masses. CASE PRESEN...
